USB Modem Support

Has anyone been able to use a USB mode, or maybe I should ask, can we USB Modem support for the MM-HL1-EXT

Hi @modemmike
The USB-C port on the HL1 can be plugged directly into a host machine (eg a laptop) to provide an ethernet connection to the device. This is the extent of the USB data support on the device - as a USB ECM/RNDIS adapter to a port on the internal switch - and should be automatic.

It sounds like you’re wanting to attach a USB cellular dongle into the HL1? If so, unfortunately this is not supported.

Thank you @ajudge that’s what I needed to know. Fortunately for my situation, I have the option to connect to my USB modem via WiFi as well, so I put the MediaTek radio into client mode, then connected it to the modem’s WiFi, problem solved.

The USB out I can only get to work on my Windows machine, Linux/Android don’t see it. Drivers, I’m sure.

Under the hood the HaLowLink1 is using a RTL8152B to provide the interface. Most Linux distributions will provide driver packages to support.

We plugged a HaLowLink1 into a couple of Android phones running Android 15, and it did connect. The interface to control the connection varied between vendors though. A Samsung Fold 4 gave some UI options to validate the connection even if there was no “internet” available through it.

My personal Xperia rejected to switch to the connection by default, presumably because it was not internet connected, but I could determine the interface was functioning through Termux. I will attempt this more rigorously in a configuration where the HaLow network is internet connected.
