range test results and settings

I have seen a bunch of posts and media items regarding long range tests results, but none of them seem to have any backing in raw data and the settings used.

We have been testing around and been getting solid results up to 150 meters on 1Mhz width and decent ping times, beyond that the connection does not drop but no more pings (that is the only test we are doing, no other traffic). That is 150m L-o-S even after setting VPEV and adding a better antenna no change in results.

I was wondering if it was possible that all test settings, firmware stuff, and other data to compare the results from Morse Micro’s long range tests to do some validation testing. Granted there is a big difference between testing and real world results and noise from town generated radio stuff may vary than some rural desert … but it shouldn’t impact on that short range.

My guess is we are either doing something very wrong, newer versions have different results, or something else (but we have multiple units with all the same results).

In what country are you testing, and with what equipment (HaLowLink / EKH-01 / etc)?

Note that Europe has lower output power than USA, so there will be a significant difference in range depending on location.

Usually range will be limited by noise floor / interference. Are you testing in an LAN environment (with limited external interference), or in a WAN environment (eg, down a city street with significant outside interference)? I’d suggest checking noise floor with a signal analyzer in a WAN environment to find an optimal channel.

Hi Flex, Thank you for your ideas. We are using EKH01 in US version.

We are aware about testing methods, our goal here is not to redo all the work going setting by setting and analysing each way until we reach the conditions Morse Micro used for their range test. For our review we want to compare it with several real-world conditions and use-cases.

So my question is more if Morse Micro can release the settings/conditions/raw data used in their setup than troubleshooting our single range setup.

Hi there, actually I had a rough test with Heltec HT-H7608 AP + Heltec HT-HC33 STA with 3dBi antenna, get quite similar test result. US 8MHz around 100m - 150m with rural buildings, even I reduce the frequency to 1MHz, it can only reach 200m - 300m. Far from it’s advertised 1km, the tricky part is that, there is no way to query the active TX power, since it’s adjusted automatically. I think it’s good to have manual mode to control tx power, at least for test purpose. With Taixin AH Halow module 4MHz 20dbm, it can reached 800m in open area. so I suspect the issue is from TX power.

@jasonhao tx power can be controlled, but it can’t be raised beyond the limits imposed by the module manufacturer as that could lead to damage or breaching regulatory restrictions.

On the AP side, you can query the active tx power in the Advanced → Wireless page of the UI, or in the commandline with iwinfo. Note that to meet regulatory restrictions, some edge band channels on some modules may operate at a reduced power so OFDM side-bands don’t go over regulatory limits.

@DCB we have recently released a “best practices” guide for field testing, which is the methodology we use for our outdoor range tests at the sites indicated. See https://www.morsemicro.com/resources/appnotes/MM_APPNOTE-44_Field_Testing_Guide.pdf

I’ll see what we can provide regarding output data - but for the Seven Mile site listed in the document, we regularly see ~10Mbps UDP at ~2km with our kits available on Mouser.
