Maximum dBi Threshold (for 900 MHz)?

See title for question.

I am currently evaluating a HalowLink-1 unit finding the performance/range disappointing, thus hunting for better antenna options. I wish to avoid burning out the RF front-end of the unit with a poor antenna choice, hence my question.

I have looked through the forums here (seeing recommendations for other omni and directional antennas up to 10 dBi) as well as referenced the file FCC documents to see if my question is answered clearly; which it isn’t.

Thank you for any assistance.

On the receive side will start to see a higher packet error rate before you see the RF front end burnt out. Packet errors increase to an unusable level at around a received signal power -25dBm.
If you can maintain received power below -30dBm you will be okay.

I’d like to know more about the performance/range issues you are experiencing. Can you share the noise and signal strength figures from the AP and an associated station?
